From pit-stop to take-off: How F1 is changing the future of air travel – CNN.com
This is a great article on how National Air Traffic Services (NATS) around the world are looking into modeling software originally developed for Formula One racing. This software analyzes live racing data and allows the pit crew to visualize a range of potential scenarios in order to make split second decisions all in an effort to get their cars back out onto the racetrack milliseconds ahead of their competitors.
This technology could be the key to unlocking congestion in the sky and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by streamlining the way aircraft make their own ‘pit-stops’ – dropping off passengers, refueling, and departing again with F1 efficiency.
The amount of time and fuel that aircraft could potentially save by avoiding circling overhead of a congested airport due to streamlining this process could be huge.
